A high-quality desk is the heart of your home office. Our solid oak tabletops in particular are more than just a work surface – they are a natural product that brings character and warmth to your room. To preserve this natural beauty for decades, wood needs the right nourishment.
We are delighted to introduce an exclusive partnership today: Deskolonia meets Hermann Sachse. From now on, you can find the legendary Berlin wood care tradition directly in our shop. Made in Germany, free from harmful substances, and perfectly matched to our tabletops.
Why does your tabletop need oil in the first place?
Solid wood is alive. It breathes and reacts to humidity. Without protection, the wood would dry out, become brittle, or deeply absorb stains from spilled coffee. Our Deskolonia tabletops are delivered perfectly prepared, but regular refreshing ensures that:
- The surface remains water-repellent.
- The golden color of the oak does not fade.
- Small scratches become almost invisible through care.
- The feel remains silky smooth.
Your guide: Hard oil or hardwax oil – which is better?
In our new Hermann Sachse range, you have a choice. Both products are excellent, but they add different accents to your setup:
1. Hermann Sachse Hard Oil – The classic for oak
If you love the pure, rustic power of oak, hard oil is your choice. It penetrates deep into the pores and highlights the grain ("flame") in an extremely elegant way. A silky matte, warm color tone is created. The natural structure of the wood remains fully palpable under your fingers.
2. Hermann Sachse Hardwax Oil – The velvety finish
Do you prefer something a bit more subtle? Hardwax oil darkens the wood less than pure oil. The wax content creates a particularly fine, velvety surface with an elegant, light shimmer. It also offers a little more protection against standing moisture.
Professional application: This is how your desk becomes like new (15-minute job)
Don't be afraid of the application – it's child's play. Simply follow these steps to seal your home office upgrade:
- Preparation: Clean the top thoroughly. For a perfect result, we recommend a quick intermediate sanding with 320 grit.
- Application: Apply the oil (or wax oil) thinly and evenly with a lint-free cloth or brush.
- Let it work & wipe off: Let the product soak in for approx. 15–20 minutes. Important: Afterwards, completely wipe off the excess oil with a dry cloth. No oil should be left "standing", otherwise it will become sticky!
- Repeat: After 10 minutes, you can apply a second thin coat. After approx. 9 hours, everything is dry.
Important tips for the first few weeks
Natural care needs time to "work". The oil penetrates several millimeters deep and hardens through oxygen. This process takes up to 4 weeks in total.
- No standing moisture: Wipe up spilled drinks immediately in the first 14 days.
- Diffusion protection: The oil protects from the inside out, but still lets the wood breathe – for a healthy room climate at your workplace.
- Food-safe: All Hermann Sachse products are saliva- and sweat-proof. So you can even eat directly from the tabletop (or place your snack on it).
FAQ – Everything about tabletops & care
Can I also use the Calendula oil?
Hermann Sachse's Calendula oil is fantastic for cutting boards and kitchen utensils. However, for the high mechanical stress of a desk (arms, keyboard, mouse), we clearly recommend the hard oil or hardwax oil.
How often should I re-oil my Deskolonia top?
For normal home office use, one refresh once a year is enough. If the surface looks dull or water no longer beads off, it's time for a little wellness program.
Is the oil suitable for all types of wood?
We tested it specifically for our Oak Collection. However, it works excellently on almost all solid woods.
Conclusion: Your desk, your heirloom
With the combination of a Deskolonia solid wood top and Hermann Sachse care, you are choosing sustainability and quality. You are not just buying a piece of furniture, but creating a work atmosphere that gets more beautiful with the years.
